Six Columbus North seniors to finalize college plans

Signing ceremony set Wednesday for athletes in baseball, basketball, softball, swimming

Six Columbus North High School seniors are expected to put pens to paper on Wednesday (Nov. 12) to finalize their commitments for college athletics and academics.

Two basketball players, two swimmers, one baseball player and one softball player are set to take part in a signing ceremony that is set for 3:30 p.m. in the CN Athletic Conference Room.

All six of the student-athletes are joining NCAA Division I programs. They are basketball players Ali Patberg (University of Notre Dame) and Josh Speidel (University of Vermont); swimmers Marah Bieger (West Virginia University) and Maddie Wyke (Ohio University); baseball player Devin Mann (University of Louisville); and softball player Kelsay Lucas (Oakland University).

These are the first six athletes in the CNHS Class of 2015 to sign letters of intent. Additional Columbus North seniors are expected to do so in ceremonies that will be held in February and April.

More information about the athletes who will take part in Wednesday’s ceremony and their respective college choices follows.

 

>> Marah Bieger, women’s swimming, West Virginia: Bieger placed 14th in the 2014 IHSAA state meet in two individual races, the 200-yard individual medley in 2:07.13 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.86. She also helped the 200 medley relay to a seventh-place finish in 1:45.90 and the 200 free relay to a 14th place finish in 3:37.01. She joins a Mountaineers’ program that placed fifth in the 2014 Big 12 Conference championship.

>> Kelsay Lucas, softball, Oakland (Mich.): Lucas hit .364 with 12 doubles, two home runs and a team-high 30 RBIs as a junior for the 17-11 Bull Dogs. She joins a Golden Grizzlies’ program that went 16-23 in 2014, including a 5-9 record in the Horizon League.

>> Devin Mann, baseball, Louisville: Mann hit .433 with 14 doubles, five triples, two home runs and 24 RBIs as a junior for the 24-6-1 Bull Dogs. He will be joining a Cardinals’ program that went 50-17 in 2014 while advancing to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. UofL becomes a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2014-15.

>> Ali Patberg, women’s basketball, Notre Dame: Patberg averaged 18.3 points, 7.1 rebounds and 5.9 assists in helping the Bull Dogs to a 23-3 record as a junior. She joins a Fighting Irish program that went 37-1, won the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season and tournament titles and finished as runner-up in the NCAA Tournament.

>> Josh Speidel, men’s basketball, Vermont: Speidel had norms of 17.2 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists in leading the Bull Dogs to a 20-6 season as a junior. He will be joining a Catamount program that went 22-11 last season, won the America East Conference regular-season title and earned an NIT berth.

>> Maddie Wyke, women’s swimming, Ohio University: Wyke finished 12th in the 2014 IHSAA state meet in the 100 butterfly in 56.39. She also was a part of the 200 medley relay that finished seventh at state in 1:45.90 and the 200 free relay that placed 14th at state in 3:37.01. She joins a Bobcats’ program that finished sixth in the 2014 Mid-American Conference meet and advanced one swimmer to the 2014 NCAA Championships.
